Application of Stainless Steel

APPLICATION OF STAINLESS STEEL

Grade SS 202
Grade SS 301

An austenitic stainless steel, because of its ability to attain high strength & ductility through moderate or severe cold working, can be used for automobile trims, conveyor belts, transportation cars such as railway coaches, metal fixtures for construction process, roof drainage products, storm door frames, etc.

Grade SS 304

It is most widely used austenitic stainless steel. It has excellent corrosion resistance and forming characteristics, used in Chemicals, Petro-Chemicals & Fertilizer Industries , & as equipment in Dairy, Food processing, Pharmaceutical Industries, in Hospitals, Households as Kitchenware, Sinks, Cutlery, Cryogenic Vessels & as Heat Exchange in Air-Conditioning, Refrigeration for machinery in paper, pulp, textile, etc.

Grade SS 304L

It is used in place of SS 304 for improved resistance to intergranular corrosion. It is used for parts & Structure which cannot be heat treated for stress relieving after welding.

Grade SS 310S

These are austenitic types with higher Chromium & Nickel content, because of their relatively high creep strength & mechanical properties. At higher temperatures these steel find application for higher temperature & server service conditions. Use for all heaters, annealing boxes, ovens, carburizing boxes, fire box sheets furnace linings, furnace stacks and dampers, gas turbine parts, nozzle diaphragm, mill equipment, textile finishing equipment, pollution control etc.

Grade SS 316

An austenitic stainless steel with 2.0% to 3.0% Mo. This improves corrosion resistance against halogens and imparts hot strength characteristics. Used for applications requiring resistance to pitting corrosion and in-halogens atmosphere. Typical applications architectural trims, marine, exteriors, chemical processing equipment, food processing equipment, petroleum refining equipment, pharmaceutical, photographic equipment, pollution control, etc.

Grade SS 316L

It has an extra-low carbon content and is a variation of SS 316. The low carbon content is necessary for welding applications where avoiding carbide precipitation is key. It is mainly used in welding applications where corrosion resistance is a concern.

Grade SS 321

An austenitic stainless steel similar to SS 304 but stabilized with titanium to avoid inter-granular corrosion. Stainless steel321 resists scaling and vibration fatigue. It is used for aircraft stacks and manifolds pressure vessels, large mufflers for stationery diesel engines, carburetors, stakes liners, etc.

Grade SS 409/ 409M

It is lowest alloyer straight chromium ferritic stainless steel. It replaces carbon steel and low alloy steel where some amount of heat & corrosion resistance and higher strength is required and appearance is secondary. It is used for fins in heater tubes, automotive exhaust system including, mufflers, resonators, silencers, pipes and emission control units, high pressure agricultural spray tanks, farm equipment, etc.

Grade SS 410S

SS 410S is the most commonly used 12% chromium stainless steel, with Excellent condition of toughness and strength can be developed. It is good choice when good formability and high strength are the en use demands resistance to mildly corrosive environment. It is used for furnaces parts and burners operating below 650. C, micrometer parts, tray supports, caps and vaporizers in petroleum fractioning towers, lining for reaction chambers, coal screens fishing tacklets, keys, tapes, bucket covers, pump parts, Petro-chemical equipment, etc.

Grade SS 420

This grade of steel contains minimum 0.15% C and 12% C. It has been thermally hardened to develop very high strength. Extremely useful for cutlery, other applications include vegetable shoppers scissors, tweezers, hand dental & surgical instruments, etc.

Grade SS 430

SS 430 with 17% is inferior to Ss304 as regards deep durability. Though it does not have good corrosion resistance properties due to the CR-Ni steel. It is used under less severe corrosive atmosphere for chemical processing equipment, furnace parts, oil-burner parts, petroleum rolling equipment, pyrometers protection tubes, recuperators, rubber plant machinery, scientific apparatus, storage vessels, tubing, television cones, electrical appliances, solar water heaters, air-conditioners, kitchenware, household appliances, parts for washing machine, etc.
